From Delhi eight persons were arrested on Wednesday in Meerut for allegedly running a betting racket during the IPL cricket match between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders, the police said on Thursday. All the accused, identified as Museer, Mushtaq, Sajid, Shahzad, Rizwan, Quayub, Shadab and Sadik, have been remanded in police custody, said Prabal Pratap Singh, SP (City), Meerut. Three of their accomplices, however, managed to escape.

Five mobile phones, several SIM cards, an LCD TV and some cash have been seized from the accused, Singh said. During interrogation of the accused, some more names have cropped up, Singh added.

Since the beginning of the 2011 World Cup Cricket and the IPL series, 27 betting syndicates have been busted in NCR and 73 persons have been arrested. At least 220 cellphones and 20 laptops have been seized.
